Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry concerned with the correction of the position of the teeth and jaws, aiming for a healthy and attractive smile.

Orthodontics can be used alone to align crooked teeth and improve a smile or to position teeth to allow other dentistry to be more successful eg. providing optimal space for a bridge or implant.

NHS care is available to under 18s who require orthodontic treatment for dental health reasons like significant crowding or protrusion of the teeth. Unfortunately treatment for more mild or cosmetic problems is not usually available on the NHS.

Our Dentists will be able to assess the position of your child’s teeth, to see if they may require othodontic treatment. For children, and more complex adult treatments, a referral to a Specialist maybe required.

Types of braces on offer at Peasholm Dental Practice

Invisalign® Clear Aligner braces – Invisalign® use a series of clear plastic aligners to move the teeth. These braces are only available privately

Traditional braces are not fitted at Peasholm Dental so patients requiring this will be referred to a local NHS provider.

What does the process involve?

Your initial tooth straightening consultation

The first step in the teeth straightening process is a consultation with one of our experienced dentists.

Your bespoke tooth alignment plan

During your consultation we will evaluate your teeth and create a personalized treatment plan based on your unique needs and goals. We will use advanced 3D imaging technology to create a custom set of teeth aligners that are tailored to your ideal smile.

Aligner Fitting & Treatment

Once your teeth aligners are ready, you will wear them for about 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, brush, and floss. You will change to a new set of teeth aligners every two weeks, and each set will gradually shift your teeth closer to your desired smile.

Enjoy your new smile!

After completing your teeth straightening treatment and achieving your desired results, it’s important to maintain your new smile by wearing an overnight retainer. To ensure that your results are permanent, it’s important to wear your retainer as directed by your dentist. By doing so, you can enjoy a straight, beautiful smile for years to come.

The treatment duration varies from person to person, but on average, it takes around 12 to 18 months. Your dentist will be able to provide you with a more accurate estimate based on your individual case.

Our teeth aligners are made from clear plastic, making them much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Most people won’t even realise you’re wearing them.

You should remove your teeth aligners before eating and drinking anything other than water to prevent them from getting stained or damaged. You should also brush your teeth before putting them back in.

For the best results, you should aim to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, only removing them to eat, drink, brush, and floss.

Out teeth aligners may cause some discomfort, especially when you first start wearing a new set. However, this discomfort is usually mild and temporary. If you experience significant pain, contact your dentist

Once your treatment is complete, you will likely need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from gradually shifting back towards their initial position. Your dentist will provide you with more specific instructions based on your individual needs.
